the blog is back

so it's been a few months.. or... the entire summer since i've updated this thing. but i have some good excuses. first, having fun in Berlin and studying full time doesn't really lend itself to sitting in front of the computing uploading photos and typing out the stories. the last few months have been fairly life-altering, an experience that lead to my current decision: to stay here for the fall. far from feeling like this is irresponsible move, a good or a bad decision, it was one that really made itself. in a sense there was little chance i could have been convinced to come back in the fall even after my first few weeks here. why? what is it? it seems like a running joke among my north american friends here that once you get to berlin you just can't go back to where you've come from. you could make an argument for the cheap rent, the cheap food, public transportation and the non-stop nightlife but i dont think that any of those things make this place what it is... somehow small town livability and friendliness have converged with a metropolis still open to the sky - literally. unlike new york and manhattan there is no sense of claustrophobia here. the freedom of movement here, aesthetically and intellectually and physically gives a sense of expanding rather than contracting horizons and possibilities. of course already i've made the city a smaller one. i'm living in a neighborhood called Friedrichshain - part of old east berlin - but specifically in a spot called Nordkitts. unlike the southern part of Friedrichshain where cafes, restaraunts, hipsters and backpackers rub elbows nordkitts is bit quieter. there's a pretty even dog to person ratio here for which the punks, punk families and the government support of pet ownership (100 euro a month...) contribute. i'll try to get some documentation on the neighborhood up soon... there's a handful of squats and collective houses, Gebaude that were formerly squats and have been reconstructed and renovated by their occupants, as evidenced by the d.i.y. paintjobs. at the moment i only leave the neighborhood to do research and go to my job. yes job. i am currently an intern/assistant at a gallery downtown (http://www.pool-gallery.com) but the language classes i take are just around the corner. today's lesson was more like a monologue where the teacher tried to debunk some of our views of the DDR. so, anyways, here are a few pictures and more on all of the above soon.

ya, i'm here.

nothing to say except that i finally got into berlin late last night. amazing (um, shitty) things that have happened since i've been here:

- had to talk to several "international finance" majors from cornell
- spilled a full nalgene of water on my bed at 3 in the morning; slept in cold, damp sheets
- ate breakfast next to talkative austrailian.

i'm sure the party will start any minute...

air india, baby

so i'm getting pretty excited about leaving. mostly excited about flying Air India with a mother of respiratory infection... i might be coughing up baby kangaroos here (eww!) but just the though of flying with a carrier that has emergency landing directions as cool as this is getting me through. if you (YOU) are lucky i'll steal you one... i like the fact that neckties, pencils, pens, high-heels and glasses are NOT allowed in case of emergency landing. in other words, sexy nerds die first. also, it has been confirmed that they serve some crazy airplane-style curry (mmm) and show bollywood movies. let the absurdity begin...

uh-oh.

according to miss margot this is the new euro-trash hotness. oh no!!!! please note, this is not old... this is from december. apparently it started in amsterdam as some off-shoot of clog dancing; now popular w/dirty futbol hooligans continent-wide. i can't confirm any of this, just saying:

perhaps worse?

songs about ice cream

because it is going to be hot soon. you're going to need some ice-cream themed jams.

things about texas

this year has been something else. meeting lauren rochell, finding out that architecture kids know how to do halloween properly, getting out to west texas and having my own space (!) for the first time in a year and a half have all contributed. mmhm. and getting through my first year of graduate school without losing it entirely - that was something, too.

ps. i miss you already, rochell.

a new career in a new town

i thought i'd start this blog with one of the pictures that ended my last one. this one, taken late afternoon by the rio de la plata, had me sitting on concrete and rebar and wondering how i'd mistook an estuary for an ocean.

so i leave for berlin on saturday. the second time in two years moving to a country with little or no working knowledge of the language. this time, however, its just me. you can find the other peregringo far afield on another continent. so its a solo mission, less company, maybe more time to make the posts funny. i hope so, anyways.

but berlin promises a few things: love parade, german classes taught by germans and visits with old friends. its enough to keep me excited even though getting there is going to be interesting.

margot, felix, erandi, karsten, p.g., see you soon...
